As a Research & Development Technician, you will assist Engineers in the development, prototyping, and testing of new and upgraded products. You will be responsible for completing internal and external documentation required before a new or upgraded product is released for manufacture. Working closely with the Production Workshop, you will ensure that new product builds adhere to stringent cost and quality standards while meeting assigned targets on time.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Build prototype assemblies and products.
- Liaise with the Development Engineer once prototypes have been manufactured and are ready for final testing.
- Complete and document any required development testing, including both hardware and software.
- Take responsibility for delivering assigned objectives and report progress to your manager.
- Ensure that documentation for new products, including BOMs (Bills of Materials) and Work Instructions in NAV (MRP), is accurately completed for the equipment being built.
- Ensure that documentation for product version upgrades, including BOMs in NAV, is completed.
- Document and report any issues encountered during prototype build/testing and recommend improvements, identifying the root cause.
- Add any new items required for new product development or version upgrades to NAV.
- Identify and report any incorrect information found in NAV to your manager.
- Identify and report failures in departmental processes to your manager.
- Inspect new critical items for R&D projects upon receipt.
- Act as the initial point of contact between the Production Department and the Research & Development Department.
- Update, review, and maintain development documentation as delegated.
- Lead the New Product Introduction (NPI) process.
- Carry out additional duties as required.
Skills and Experience
- Experience in electronics assembly and prototype build.
- Experience in mechanical assembly and prototype build.
- Soldering experience, including Surface-Mount Device (SMD) soldering.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in work.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Confidence to constructively question and challenge engineers where appropriate.
- Ability to read and interpret manufacturing drawings and build notes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Qualifications
- HND in Electronics, a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
